COVID-19 Testing

Of the many lessons we have learned during this pandemic, perhaps the biggest one is that you get a much clearer picture of who someone is when the chips are down. True to form, our business partners have revealed themselves to be what they were all along: upfront, dependable, reliable.

So… what’s the difference between these tests? What’s this “PCR” I keep hearing about all the time?! And why is everyone so “sensitive” about “specificity”?

Sensitivity and Specificity

Sensitivity measures how accurate tests are to rule in (positive) a COVID-19 infection. Specificity measures how accurate tests are to rule out (negative) a COVID-19 infection.

Molecular/PCR

Samples are drawn from the nasal cavity and the Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) is isolated using a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) analyzer to detect active COVID-19 infection. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) refers to the PCR nasal swab test as the “gold standard” for clinical diagnostic detection of COVID-19.

Antigen Tests

These tests also utilize a nasal swab and detect the proteins of the virus itself. Sensitivity of the antigen test is generally lower than PCR tests.

Antibody Tests

Also referred to as rapid result tests, these tests look for evidence that a person’s immune system is responding to being infected. Results can be delivered in as little as 10 minutes.
